The Different Tree

by Elisa Boxer

A reliable plot summary of The Different Tree by Elisa Boxer cannot be supplied from the title and the “Real Stories” classification alone; no book text or publisher synopsis was provided. The package below is therefore a provisional, text-dependent guide—not a verified account of the book’s characters, events, or themes—and should be checked against the book before classroom use.

Big Idea

Provisional teaching focus: Writers shape how readers notice and understand difference through their choice of details, perspective, and pacing. When writing about real subjects, students should distinguish documented facts from interpretation.

Discussion Questions

1.What makes the tree “different” in this book? Which words or illustrations support your answer?
2.Whose perspective shapes our understanding of the tree, and how might another perspective change that understanding?
3.Which moment seems most important to the tree’s story? How does the author help us recognize its importance?
4.Where did you read quickly, and where did you want to stop and look closely? What caused that change?
5.What does this real story help you understand about its subject? Which questions would you still like to investigate?

Lesson Plan

⏱ 45–50 minutes📦 A copy of The Different Tree, paper, pencils, crayons or colored pencils, chart paper, and sticky notes

Learning Goals

Identify the book’s central subject and an important event using textual or visual evidence.
Distinguish facts established by the book from personal interpretations or imagined additions.
Use sentence length, descriptive detail, and paragraph breaks to influence pacing.
Explain how illustrations and page layout affect attention and reading speed.

Activity Steps

1.Read The Different Tree aloud and examine the illustrations. Establish what the book actually tells readers about the tree, its setting, and the people or other subjects involved.
2.Create a two-column chart labeled “Established by the Book” and “Our Interpretations.” Record observations with page or spread references.
3.Model how to summarize one verified moment in two short sentences, then slow it down using additional details supported by that same spread.
4.Have students choose a moment and write a quick version followed by a close-up version. Remind them not to invent dialogue, feelings, or historical facts.
5.Ask students to illustrate both versions and use spacing or paragraph breaks to guide the reader’s attention.
6.Invite partners to read both versions aloud, discuss their different speeds, and revise one pacing choice.

Standards Connections

ELA: CCSS RI.2.1 — Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of key details, if the book is confirmed as informational text.
ELA: CCSS RI.2.7 — Explain how specific images contribute to and clarify a text, if applicable to the edition.
ELA: CCSS W.2.8 — Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
ELA: CCSS SL.2.1 — Participate in collaborative conversations about grade-level topics and texts.
Visual arts: Explain how illustration, composition, and spacing direct a viewer’s attention. These are suggested grade-2 connections because no grade level was supplied.

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!

Use The Different Tree as a shared text for investigating how a writer controls the reader’s attention. Because the book’s text and illustrations were not supplied, this study does not assume that Boxer uses particular sentence patterns, narrative devices, or artistic effects. Instead, students examine the actual pages, identify the choices they find, and explain what those choices do. Begin with the title: “different” invites a question, but readers must discover what that word means in this particular story. During the read-aloud, notice where the book moves through information quickly and where it gives a subject or moment more space. Compare the effects of wording, detail, illustration, and page turns rather than treating short sentences as automatically fast or long sentences as automatically slow. The writing workshop transfers those observations into brief, evidence-based compositions. Students preserve the facts of a real story while experimenting with how much attention each fact receives. The central craft lesson is that pacing changes the reader’s experience without requiring the writer to change what happened.

Element	How to notice or teach it in the novel
1. Pacing	Identify one spread in The Different Tree that invites lingering and another that moves the account forward. Ask students to explain the difference using actual words, images, or layout.
2. Plot	Sequence the book’s verified events, if it presents a narrative. If it is organized by information rather than events, map that structure instead of imposing a problem-and-solution plot.
3. Prosody	Read a short passage twice with different phrasing and emphasis. Discuss which performance best fits its punctuation, meaning, and treatment of the tree.
4. Word	Begin with “different” in the title, then collect significant words from the text. Examine how each word makes the subject more precise or shapes a reader’s response.
5. Concept	After reading, explain what kind of difference the title names. Separate that text-supported concept from broader lessons students might personally draw.
6. Voice & Worldview	Find language that reveals how the narrator presents the tree and its circumstances. Support descriptions of the voice—such as reflective or matter-of-fact—with evidence rather than assumptions.
7. Point of View	Determine who tells the account and whose experiences receive attention. Distinguish the author’s narration from any quoted speech or perspectives documented in the book.
8. Setting & Place	Locate the tree in the time and place established by the book. Notice whether setting is introduced all at once or revealed gradually.
9. Original Characters	Identify the actual people, living subjects, or other central figures presented in the account. Discuss how Boxer makes them distinct without asking students to invent biographical details.
10. Dialogue	If the book includes dialogue, examine how it changes the reading pace and conveys information. If it does not, discuss how narration carries the account without invented quotations.
11. Details	Collect three details that help readers understand this particular tree. Ask which are essential to the account and which encourage closer observation.
12. Descriptions	Compare what the words describe with what the illustrations show. Have students write a description based only on features supported by their chosen spread.
13. Firsts	Examine the tree’s first appearance or first description. Discuss what readers know at that point and what the author leaves for later.
14. Immediacy & Engagement	Identify the opening choice that first draws attention to the subject. Explain whether interest comes from a question, image, action, fact, or another observable feature.
15. Story Scenes, Summaries & Structures	Look for places that focus closely on a moment and places that condense information or time. If both occur, compare how much reading space each receives.
16. Tension / Suspense / Surprise	Track uncertainties or unexpected information that actually arise in the reading. Do not assume the tree faces danger or rejection unless the book establishes it.
17. Flashback, Flash-Forward, Cliffhanger	Check whether the account moves backward or forward in time or delays an answer. If none of these devices appears, use the book to discuss the effectiveness of a more direct sequence.
18. Page Turns and Chapter Breaks	Pause before a page turn and ask what information readers expect next. Examine chapter breaks only if the edition contains them.
19. Pace & Creativity	Rewrite a verified tree-related moment at two speeds while keeping its facts unchanged. Compare how selection and arrangement—not invention—create different effects.
20. Play	Let students rearrange their own factual sentence cards to test different openings. Return to the book to check that each arrangement preserves the event sequence and meaning.
21. Performance	Perform a brief passage aloud using pauses and emphasis justified by the text. Invite listeners to explain how the delivery directs attention.
22. Personality	Discuss how the tree or people in the book are made distinctive through selected details. Separate literal attributes from personification or reader interpretation.
23. Humor	Look for humor only if students can identify evidence in the words or images. If the tone is serious, discuss why adding humor could change or misrepresent the account.
24. Pause	Choose a place where stopping briefly supports understanding. Explain whether the pause responds to an important fact, an illustration, punctuation, or an emotional moment established by the book.
25. Poetry / Poetic Devices	Search for actual examples of imagery, alliteration, comparison, or personification. Discuss their effects without labeling the writing poetic solely because its subject is a tree.
26. Repetition	Track any repeated words, images, or ideas. If repetition occurs, explain whether it provides emphasis, continuity, rhythm, or a change in meaning.
27. Rhythm	Read neighboring sentences aloud and compare their lengths and patterns. Notice how the resulting rhythm supports the information or moment being presented.
28. Punctuation	Inspect punctuation in a short passage and test its effect through oral reading. In students’ writing, revise punctuation for both clarity and appropriate pauses.
29. Questions	Distinguish questions printed in the book from questions readers generate. Follow one reader question and identify where it is answered—or whether it remains open.
30. Compare-Contrast	Determine what comparison, if any, makes the tree’s difference understandable. Use only comparison points supplied by the book or clearly labeled observations.
31. Objects	Identify objects actually present in the account or illustrations. Discuss how one helps establish place, explain an event, or focus attention.
32. Threes	Check for groups of three in wording, images, or structure without assuming they exist. Students can then try a three-detail description using verified information.
33. Lists	Look for lists or clusters of details in the text. Compare their effect with presenting the same information in separate sentences.
34. White Space & Negative Space	Examine how open areas around text and images guide attention on a chosen spread. Discuss the visual effect without assuming every blank area represents silence or sadness.
35. Art & Graphics	Study how the actual illustrations or graphics contribute information about the tree. Distinguish visual observations from facts explicitly stated in the prose.
36. Interactives & Gamification	Turn rereading into an evidence hunt: partners locate a detail, a pacing choice, and a question the book answers. This is a classroom adaptation, not a claim that the book includes interactive features.
37. Placement	Notice where important information appears within a sentence, spread, or sequence. Discuss how moving it earlier or later might change emphasis or anticipation.
38. Form	Inspect the edition’s actual form, including its narrative, informational features, and any back matter. Explain how those components help readers understand a real subject.
39. Dummy	Create a four-page paper dummy retelling one verified moment from the book. Allocate facts and illustrations across pages to test how page turns change pacing.
40. Passion	Ask what about the tree’s documented story students find worth sharing. Help them express that interest through accurate detail rather than unsupported claims about the author’s intentions.

Pace-Write It!

20-minute Pace-Write-It! task: “Slow Down One True Moment.” Minutes 0–3: Revisit one spread that establishes something important about the tree; name the exact fact or event. Minutes 3–6: List three details supported by its text or illustration, labeling each source. Minutes 6–10: Write a two-sentence factual version. Minutes 10–15: Write a four-to-six-sentence close-up version using supported details and deliberate sentence or paragraph breaks; do not invent speech, thoughts, or events. Minutes 15–18: Read both versions to a partner and identify where the reading slows. Minutes 18–20: Revise one pacing choice and complete the reflection, “I slowed the reader down by ___ so they would notice ___.” Younger students may dictate or combine drawings with captions.

Classroom Activities

One Tree, Two Reading Speeds

After reading the book, students select one verified moment involving its central tree and create two illustrated versions: a brief factual account and a slower, close-up account. They use details supported by the text or illustrations, then compare how sentence length, detail, and page layout affect reading speed. Suggested adaptation: grades 2–5; younger students may dictate their writing.
